New Pearls from the Antilles

May 19, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Check out our pre-concert “Cuba Chat” at 6:30 PM, featuring Jose Gavilondo, direct from Havana, and the five Cascadia composers who visited the Havana Contemporary Music Festival and heard their works played there last November.
Music by composers living in Cuba today, performed by the Fear No Music Ensemble
Among the works being performed is the string quartet Habanera Sensual y Contradanza Caprichosa by Havana composer Guido López-Gavilán. Maestro López-Gavilán is the director of the annual Havana Festival of Contemporary Music, and hosted five Cascadia composers at his 2016 festival last November.
Also, to our great delight, one of the other composers represented on this program will be here to attend the premiere of a work especially written for the Fear No Music performers. Besides attending his premiere, he will give talks to students and faculty at Portland State University and other institutions during his stay in Portland.
His name is José V. Gavilondo Peón and his composition is titled Half-remembered Dreams for flute, piano and percussion. Pepe, as he is known, is the director of one of the contemporary music ensembles that we heard at the time we attended that festival this past year.
