Open Discussion: Leading off with Dr. David Bernstein

March 14 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Cascadia Composers Selection Committee guidelines: Cascadia members who volunteer to judge anonymous submissions for concerts: what should they be looking for in the process. How do we go about judging quality in a piece? Does a piece show originality, and if so, what do we mean by that word. Can a work be “too tonal” and be excluded from a CC concert? What about skill in a work, and how do we define that. How do we define a piece that we give a low score to; how do we define a work that we consider to be of high quality? How do we keep out our own biases as composers when we examine a work for skill, quality, imagination and originality? And finally, do we keep an audience in mind when we examine scores for performance inclusion, and if so, how do we explain that issue?

This open discussion ended up mostly being a community discussion.

These presentations are part of a monthly series by our members. They are typically held the second Monday of every month. For more information on the series, please see https://cascadiacomposers.org/monthly-presentations/
