Lisa Neher: Composing for Singers
University-trained composers typically study instrumental writing and orchestration for two or more terms, walking away with at least one of the major textbooks on the subject to use as a reference. In contrast, courses in composing for singers and published references are rare. Composer & new music mezzo-soprano Dr. Lisa Neher will share an overview of effective writing for singers, including topics such as range, tessitura, voice types, text setting, pitch and harmonic support, notation practices, and select extended techniques. Singers are some of the most enthusiastic musicians out there and working with them on new music is an exciting and meaningful process! With a set of principles in mind, composers can write music that takes advantage of idiomatic properties of voices, rehearses effectively, and communicates powerfully with audiences.
