Presentation by Mark Vigil — Gamelan Music
October 11 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pmFree
Mark Vigil will give his last year’s attempted presentation, which was interrupted by technical difficulties. He will share some of his original Balinese and Javanese gamelan music along with his latest woodwind quintet, and a new piece for chamber orchestra. Mark says: “Many years ago I was very excited about composing music which combined western instruments with the indigenous music of Java and Bali. Aesthetically I loved this music and I thought the timbral possibilities of combining Western instruments with the gamelan orchestra would be compelling. Balinese gamelan music and the Javanese gamelan music of Lou Harrison has always been of great interest to me. Back in the late 70’s, Lou Harrison and Paul Dresher taught gamelan theory at Cornish. I was a student at Cornish for five years.”
