Liz Nedela — Archiving and Protecting Our Compositions & Dr. Greg A Steinke — Music Licensing in a Digital World

September 14, 2020 @ 7:30 pm

1st – Liz Nedela: Archiving and Protecting Our Compositions

1. Cataloging, archiving, and protecting our work is crucial and provides valuable records for many aspects in the music world, as well as for our eventual heirs. This can become time consuming; but to make it easier, we can set up a process to fill in the blanks as we compose our music. I can offer some tips, and I will also share valuable information from a member of NACUSA-LA, who has developed this even further.

2. Digital streaming is an exciting and fun way to publicize our music; but it has become a concern that our compositions are not adequately protected. To safeguard our music, we can embed ISRC (International Standard Recording Codes) in our recordings (including mp3’s). It is also helpful to have an open communication with recording artists and to be aware of Music Licensing. This is new territory for us, and it requires more work in our process. However, as with cataloging, I have set up a system for my own work that I will share.

2nd – Dr. Greg A Steinke: Music Licensing in a Digital World

“Music Licensing 101” — I would like to present a very general overview of PRO’s, mechanical and broadcast licensers (Sound Exchange, Harry Fox, MLC, etc); beyond that I would like to respond to any questions or help that people have or need. I’ll provide a set of PDFs, that address each of these areas in more detail as well as have web site information. (I can have these available in the chat list for download or we can send out ahead of time when the Zoomlink is sent out for the session.)

These presentations are part of a monthly series by our members. They are typically held the second Monday of every month.
