Performance: Saturday, November 10th, 2018
Venue: Polish Hall, 3832 N Interstate Ave, Portland, OR 97227
Submission Deadline:
- Proposals: 11:59 PM PST, Monday, January 1st, 2018;
- Scores and Parts: 11:59 PM PDT, Monday, August 27th, 2018
Eligibility: All Cascadia members in good standing.
Concert theme: The birth of Poland as a modern nation, with particular reference to its musical culture, from mazurkas and mountain music traditions to Chopin, Szymanowski, Lutoslawski, Górecki and so forth.
This is a call for proposals for new works. A selection committee, including members of both Cascadia and the Polish Library Building Association (of Portland), will review all submissions. Three of the composers will be commissioned by the PLBA ($500 apiece) to write a new work (target duration 5 to 10 minutes) to be presented during the concert.
Instrumentation: At least three instruments from a standard piano quintet (piano, two violins, viola, cello), up to the full ensemble. For example: String trio, piano trio, string quartet, etc.
Submission procedure: Because of the specific nature of the concert theme, submissions will be handled differently than usual. Interested members must first submit a proposal describing the (one) work they intend to create for the concert, along with scores of two representative existing works, including at least one work that gives some idea how the composer typically uses or might use the instrumental forces above.
If a member’s proposal is selected, they are expected to complete their work, including parts, and e-mail them in no later than the August 27th deadline. Musicians will have been contracted by then and will be expecting to start work, so plan on finishing up well in advance.
Submit the following through the submission form on the Cascadia website. Anonymous submission is not required:
1. Scores in PDF format
2. Recordings if available (computer-generated OK if none is) in MP3 format. Links may be submitted instead, but note that MP3’s up to 25MB may now be submitted. There must be a sound file for each score submitted.
3. Text file in standard format (such as .txt, .doc, .rtf or .pdf), clearly presenting your proposal. Also please send a bio (may be in the same file). Program notes for the submitted work samples are optional.
The commissioned composers will be announced in January of 2018.
